In October of 2004, Sr. Barbara Davis brought 19 turtles to Franciscan Academy. The turtles had been in a habitat at St. Mary's School in Shelby, OH. Mrs. Janet Bradley took care of the turtles and because she was leaving a new home needed to be found. Thus, Sr. Barbara at the Franciscan Academy adopted the turtles promising to build a habitat for them on the school grounds as a mission to St. Francis.
October/November a tentative enclosure was built as a fall gardening class. With the school closing and several students attending All Saints School it was presented to Sr. Marie Christine and 4th grade teacher Ms. Sue Grod to adopt the turtles. The turtles lived at the Grod's and Williams' home their first summer in 2014 and a habitat was built with Fr. Kent Kaufman's approval near the Atrium. Twelve turtles were adopted and all survived the winter of 2014-15.
This September 14th our first baby turtle emerged from the habitat and 3 other babies have been found since. They are all living successfully in the 4th grade classroom. The names of the baby turtles are Jubilee, Francis, Fischer, & Suju.
